LIE #5: “God Has Made Death a Natural Part of Life”

Image
This lie about God is an interesting one. A person can understand why someone might want to believe it. If death is a natural part of life, then we should embrace it rather than run from it. However, this contradicts the human experience. The vast majority of people want to live and will go to every length and expense to eke out a few more moments here on this earth.  In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the character named Yoda said, “Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not.” In other words, “Get over it!” This lie is a coping mechanism for death. We will see that the Bible has a far better answer for death! Come, join us on Sunday, May 1 at 9:15 AM.

We are continuing our journey with Jesus.  This week we saw Jesus die on the cross.  We used a diorama of Golgatha and the tomb.  The children were very interested in how things looked and where they would be.  As we focused on all the wheres of everything, our hearts were opened to the hows and whys!  There were many extra hugs during Jesus time this week because their hearts were sad that their sins (and mine and ...

Have you ever been lost before? Husbands, it's okay to say yes; otherwise, we'll have to ask your wives. Cliches aside, try to remember a moment when you were truly, hopelessly lost. Do you recall the feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realized your situation? I certainly do. When I was in third grade, I played soccer in our city's recreational league, along with my sister who is two years older. We had practice on the same night and had a midweek church service that we were supposed to attend afterward. My sister's classmate happened to be on her team as well, and her parents were going to pick us up from practice and bring us to meet my parents at church. Only, my sister forgot to tell them that. When her practice ended, they got into the car and drove to church, leaving me at the other end of the soccer fields as the sun started to set. I felt terrified, hopeless. Alone. Do you ever feel like that now? Maybe you struggle with loneliness because you often are...

04/21/2022 Principal's Note

Easter is my favorite holiday. Celebrating Christ's resurrection from the dead, especially after the somber forty days of Lent, is exciting! The music we sing in Easter services is upbeat and joyful, even more so than Christmas music. As Christians, Easter is a celebration of our victory through Jesus. Isn't it interesting that the world seeks to undermine the two most important holidays in the church? Christmas is no longer about Jesus' birth, but about candy canes and presents, Santa and reindeer. People say the "true meaning of Christmas" is sharing, family, or loving each other, which are all good things, but which eclipse our Savior's birth. Easter is no different. Instead of being about Christ's resurrection, Easter has been transformed into another Halloween in which a rabbit lays eggs (what??) as a representation of the pagan god of fertility. Somehow this has morphed into parents giving children absurd amounts of candy in colored baskets....

04/13/2022 Principal's Note

Holy Week is my favorite stretch of the church year. Palm Sunday is full of excitement as Jesus entered Jerusalem to the joyful shouts of the crowds. Monday, Jesus, in his righteous anger, cleared the temple of the greedy merchants and money-changers. Tuesday, Jesus visited the Mount of Olives with his disciples and spoke about the End Times; this was also the day that Judas Iscariot negotiated the price for his betrayal of his Savior. Thursday through Sunday are, of course, the main events: learning about the Lord's Supper and watching Jesus wash his disciples' feet on Maundy Thursday; the agony and gut-wrenching sorrow of Good Friday; the hopeful anticipation of Saturday; the triumph and all-consuming joy of Easter Sunday. But what about today, the Wednesday of Holy Week? The Bible does not record anything about Jesus' actions on the Wednesday of Holy Week. For this reason, many call it "Silent Wednesday." Perhaps Jesus took one last opportunity for rest and com...

LIE #4: “God Helps Those Who Help Themselves”

Image
Where did this lie come from? Is it in the Bible? No, but you will find a form of it in the Koran: “Indeed, Allah will not change the conditions of a population until they change what is in themselves” (Ar-Ra’d 13:11). This lie about God has its roots in pagan religion. Five hundred years before Christ, Aesop wrote, “The gods help them that help themselves.” Our current wording was used by the deist Ben Franklin, who said in Poor Richard’s Almanac, “God helps those who help themselves.” Satan often couches his lies in half-truths. We seek to expose this lie and to give an answer for the hope that we have!  Come, join us on Sunday, April 10 at 9:15 AM.

04/06/2022 Principal's Note

I'm going to level with you: Our WELSSA self-study and site team visit have stressed me out for months, and I can't wait for them to be over. As someone who has high standards, every time we ran into something that was not "up to par," and every time I had to answer a question from our site team with a less than exceptional answer, it bothered me. Even though, being new this year, I have not had the opportunity to tackle some of these things yet, I yearn for Emanuel to be as top-notch as I know we can be, and some things that happened in the past are still in the way. Do you ever feel like that? Something that happened in the past, whether it was hours, months, or years ago, just keeps coming back to bug you. A poor choice you made, a sin against you by a friend or coworker that you are finding hard to forgive, an event in your life that you had no control over that has scarred you; it doesn't really matter what it is. The past has a way of holding us back, like a...

LIE #3: “God Has Grown Softer on Sin”

Image
Some people have a caricature of God in their minds. They see him as all law and fury in the Old Testament but all gospel and fuzzies in the New Testament. People believe that God has grown softer on sin. If this lie stands, it could destroy souls. This lesson will seek to debunk this lie and give us an answer to those who believe it.  Come, join us on Sunday, April 3 at 9:15 AM.

Year-End Scrip Info

Just a reminder that the scrip year ends on April 30, 2022, and the new year begins on May 1. If you haven’t purchased scrip for a while or have never used scrip, now might be a great time to come into the office and get your account set up or buy scrip before the year ends.
