Palm Sunday - April 10, 2022 at 10:30 AM

Image
Children aged 3 to sixth grade and their parents are invited to join in a procession with palm branches at the start of our 10:30 AM worship service on Palm Sunday. We'll walk into church waving our palms and then the Sunday School children will share a special song of praise. If you'd like your child to participate, please make sure they attend Sunday School over the next few weeks to learn the song (9:15 AM in the Commons). All children will be given a palm branch to take home! Hosanna to the King!

03/30/2022 Principal's Note

Do you remember your children's first words? Many times it's "mama" or "dada." Sometimes it's "dog" if you happen to have one of those roaming your house. "No" can also make an appearance fairly quickly. Once those first words come out of their mouths, verbal communication is constant. Even before those first words though, your children likely communicated their displeasure in a unique way that may not have ever changed, even if they are in 8th grade now: whining.  There may not be a more grating sound on parents' ears than a child's incessant whining. Infants whine when they are hungry or upset. Toddlers whine when parents stop them from doing things that could cause them harm, because of course that's what they want to do. Preschoolers whine when they don't get their way. Elementary school students whine about things that "aren't fair." Middle-schoolers whine about...all of those things. Human beings, w

CAMM Dresses for Zambia and Malawi

Image
"The Lutheran Women's Missionary Society (LWMS) of Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London, WI recently sewed 61 dresses for the young girls, ages infant to teens, in Zambia and Malawi, Africa. These countries are part of the Central Africa Medical Missions or CAMM.  There were many volunteers who helped with this project from beginning to end, including Heather Sulzle and her 59 art class students. Her students made yarn/plastic canvas crosses so that each dress had a cross in its pocket to remind each young girl of their Savior’s love for them. The project started with many donations of fabric, lace, bias tape, elastic, and thread. We had a workday to cut the fabric and other items to size. A ‘kit’ was then made for each dress and placed into a Ziploc bag along with directions. Many volunteers and LWMS members took kits home to sew and in a very short time, they were all sewn. Some women enjoyed it so much they came back to get even more kits to sew!  Everyone remarked how cut

FORWARD Forum this Sunday

This Sunday at 9:15am between church services we will be holding another open forum to discuss the details of the Emanuel renovation project.  Even back at the time of Jesus, a "forum" was a place where people would gather to share ideas and exchange information, which is why we see all forums are vital, not just to a project, but to our whole ministry effort as a church. We hope many attend so that everyone's voices are heard as we continue to plan for our church now and for generations to come. We'll see you Sunday!

Forensics

Forensics season is in full swing!  We are excited that so many of our 5-8th grade students have volunteered to speak publicly.  This is a great skill that will be with them for the rest of their lives!  These students will perform at Emanuel on Thursday, April 21, at 5:00pm, and at St. Paul's, Appleton, on Wednesday, April 27, beginning at 4:30pm.  Click in for more detail about these performances!

03/23/2022 Principal's Note

In a country that seems to value individual liberties over all else, unity is difficult to come by. Sure, we are the "United" States of America, and our pledge talks about "...one nation, under God..." but when was the last time you were part of a conversation and everyone agreed 100% about the topic? Even if you can recall a conversation like that, how long would it take before you and the other people realized something on which your opinions differed? When we run into dissenting ideas, often our first reaction is to circle the wagons, recoil into ourselves, and reach out to people that we know share our beliefs in the matter to reassure us. Sometimes that's a good thing, like if someone attacks our faith in Jesus. We should take a step back from situations like that and build ourselves up in the fellowship of believers. Sometimes, though, it's not such a good thing. Let me give you a heads-up about two upcoming situations at Emanuel where people are not g

03/09/2022 Principal's Note

Think back over the course of your life, and I'll bet you can find an instance where the cliché "hindsight is 20/20" applies. The gist of that statement is that it's easy to look at moments in the past and critique how things were handled. Need some examples? "Looking back, I probably shouldn't have tried to make it the rest of the trip on 1/16 of a tank of gas." "Now that I think about it, tearing off the entire roof without checking the weather forecast was not a good idea." "Visiting the humane society after touring the Tyson plant wasn't one of my best choices." Okay, so these aren't really serious examples, but you get the idea. I wonder how many situations you can think of over the last couple of years, serious situations, where this saying applies? How many relationships were broken over the pandemic? How many knee-jerk reactions by individuals and by organizations caused suffering? How many times did people with all di

10 Lies About God: “God Wants Me to Be Happy”

Image
Join us this Sunday as we begin a new Bible Study, 10 Lies About God. Sunday mornings between services (9:15-10:15 AM) we'll explore some common lies that our world tells us are true, but God himself refutes in his Word. There are many versions of the lie “God wants me to be happy.” For example: “God wants me to be rich”; or “God wouldn’t want me to rush into marriage so I’ll live with my significant other”; or “God wouldn’t deny me these feelings I have for someone of the same sex”; and on and on. Usually, the person saying this phrase is trying to justify a sin that God condemns. It sounds cruel to say, “God doesn’t want me to be happy!” Well then, what does God want for me? Come, find out.

03/02/2022 Principal's Note

The news isn't good: Hundreds of civilians killed or wounded; thousands of soldiers dead on both sides; millions of dollars in damage; an incalculable impact on the world economy. As the 7th-grade geography teacher, I have tried to keep the students informed of the situation occurring in Ukraine; not only is it relevant to the topic of geography, but it is also one of those "living history" events, like Pearl Harbor, 9/11, and the COVID-19 pandemic. One day we will be teaching students from our textbooks about the current happenings in Ukraine in the same way we teach them about the American Revolution and the Invasion of Normandy. We will also have first-hand accounts from some of our WELS members and members of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church, our sister synod based in Ukraine. Reading those primary sources of information is heartbreaking. All we can do is watch and pray. Sometimes that sounds defeatist, doesn't it? "All we can do is pray." We wish we could
