01/26/2022 Principal's Note

"I'm not angry; I'm just disappointed." If I had a dollar for every time I heard that from my father when I was growing up, I might be driving a nicer car than what is sitting in the parking lot across the street from Emanuel. Hearing those words always stung more than any other discipline I could receive. Knowing that my behavior had hurt my loving parent's heart gave my conscience a good thumping. I do NOT like disappointing people! On the other side of things, I am hugely disappointed in the Packers right now. Can you believe how that season ended? What a sad excuse for a number one seed, to go out the way they did. At first, I was angry, mostly because I spend so much time during the football season watching the Packers play, or reading news about the Packers, or talking to people about the Packers; but nothing matters if you don't take that last step and win it all. Now though, a few days later, the anger is gone, and all that is left is that hollow feeli

Jesus is beginning His public work of teaching and preaching in our Bible lesson this week.  We learned how John the Baptist (who eats locusts and honey - EWWW!!) announced the Savior with, "Look, the Lamb of God who comes to take away the sins of the world!"  John was preparing the people, teaching them to be ready.  He was baptizing them with the water and the Word - God's Word.  Now Jesus enters the public spotlight by coming to John to be baptized.  When John completes the

I am a self-proclaimed, proud-of-it coffee snob. Currently, I own five coffee brewing systems that make a cup of joe in completely different ways. I have my eye on a sixth, but I've told my children they have to start getting rid of old toys to make room for new ones in the basement, and I'm not willing to practice what I preach...at least not yet.  Coffee is one of those polarizing foods that has its public image change every so often. People either trumpet the benefits of coffee and how good it is for you ( check this out ), or they decry the caffeine content and insist that it stunts your growth. As with most things in life, both sides probably are correct to a certain extent. However, if you invest yourself in some trial-and-error work with coffee, you can learn exactly the right amount for you. Too little, and you're still exhausted all morning; too much, and you're bouncing off the walls with a racing heart; too much creamer is a lot of extra calories; too little

Chapel Offering Update Our second quarter chapel offering, which has been supporting our Emanuel radio broadcast ministry, has now come to a close, raising a total of $1,468.54. Praise God! Prayer Request Please continue to keep the health of our students and staff in your regular prayers. As you are fully aware, we have had a number of teachers out sick recently. After chapel, the students were informed that today, we have five substitute teachers/helpers in the building. We are hoping to have our classrooms back to nearly full strength next week. Basketball Games Rescheduled We thank you for your patience regarding the postponement of our last set of basketball games. We are working with Mt. Olive and our referees to find a date to have those games, and so far, it looks like we will be able to do that sooner rather than later. As soon as we have more information, we will let you know. 2022/2023 Calendar and Other Items The calendar for next school year is finished and available for v

Forensics Time!

Forensics is upon us!  It is time for our students to decide if public speaking is an area they would like to expand.  Forensics is open to 5th - 8th graders.  There are many areas of public speaking available for participation.  There will be an Emanuel Forensics team formed; therefore, positions on the team will be decided after practice has begun and abilities are established.  The Forensics team will participate in the Emanuel Forensics Day on a date to be determined.  The team will be coached by Mrs. D. and volunteers.  Practices will be during the school day; however, there will be practice and assistance needed from home!  As with any co-curricular activity, forensics is subject to the eligibility requirements.  If your student would like to participate on the Emanuel Forensics Team, please fill out and return the permission slip by January 14, 2022 to Mrs. D. A paper copy went home with all interested students on Monday(1/10/22)  Practices will follow during school hours.

01/12/2022 Principal's Note

How do you feel about running late? As my wife can fully attest, there is almost nothing else in life that gives me more anxiety than being late for something. I routinely set clocks five minutes ahead to give myself just a little extra time when I need to be somewhere. Growing up, my family was often late for various engagements, so much so that being on "Fuerstenau time" has become a running joke. Those experiences, and the anxiety that came along with them, solidified the importance of punctuality in my mind. But, with three little kids...I'm still sometimes late. Being on time is important. If you are late for school, you are marked tardy, which could end up having consequences. If you are late for work, your supervisor may write you up or warn you, and repeat offenses definitely end up having consequences. Being late for a celebration may give people a negative impression. Whether consciously or not, we view being early or on time as a positive trait, and being late

School News - Week of 01/03/2022

Chapel Offering Update To date, we have collected $1,342.77 for our Emanuel radio ministry; that is enough to sponsor eight church services! We will be sponsoring the radio broadcast for this coming weekend, which brings God's Word into the homes of people who are unable to attend church in person. What a blessing! Christmas Collection We are so thankful to everyone who contributed, whether it was time, materials, or both, to our Christmas Collection this year. The children did a wonderful job delivering their care packages to our shut-in members and others and singing some Christmas carols to spread the love of Christ. People have poured out their appreciation to Emanuel. Open House Next week Tuesday, Emanuel will host an open house from 2:00-7:00. This event is to welcome new families who would like to join our Emanuel family next school year. If you know of a family who is looking for a new school home, let them know with the referral form that was sent home this week; if they r

People love new things, don't they? New cars, new toys, new babies, new seasons of their favorite Netflix shows...the list could go on. Driving home from church this past weekend, I saw we have a new Mexican restaurant in New London, and I got excited! Why do we enjoy new things so much? Perhaps because we feel that NEW must be BETTER, and this time, it will be everything I imagined it could be! New is romanticized and idealized. How could something new NOT be great? Unfortunately, as King Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NIV 2011). New things are only new for a little while, and then the tarnish of our sinful reality sets in. That new car? Something will break down and cost you money. Those new toys? They will either break or cause strife in your family (or be forgotten entirely in a few days). The new season of your favorite show? It won't liv
