12/15/2021 Principal's Note

When I was much younger, a good family friend of ours named Jim told my older sister and me a spooky story on the way home from an evening church service. He told us about the "fog people." A summary of the story is that on foggy nights, some sort of otherworldly being waited under bridges to stop hapless motorists and take them away. Our route, of course, had several such bridges along it, and that night happened to look quite similar to our weather today. When the car ahead of us slammed on its brakes while crossing one of those bridges for seemingly no reason, my sister and I just about lost our minds. We were terrified! Weather like today reminds me of how we go through life. Even as Christians, the path forward always seems pretty foggy. We stumble about in our careers and our relationships. Many times, we look around ourselves and think, "Where am I, and how did I get here?" It can be downright scary! Did you know the book of Job uses the word "darkness&q

Something new for the blog! Each week there has always been a poster on some school bulletin boards that shows the top point earners for AR...Accelerated Reader. There are two lists. One for K-4 and one for grades 5-8. We thought it would be nice for parents to get that list, too. The list will be updated on the blog each time it is updated for the bulletin boards.

We focused on the birth of our Savior. We thought about what it might have REALLY been like in the stable.  I shared stories about what happens with animals and mangers, how it was noisy and smelly.  We usually see beautiful nativities which are great reminders of Jesus' birth.  Remembering how it really was, makes our appreciation even greater.  Our Lord lowered himself out of heaven to the troubles of this world.  He did it all for us!  Then we met the shepherds and their excitement...it reminded of ourselves and "Go, Tell, it on the Mountain!"  May we tell everyone we see about the amazing birth of our Savior! Sheep have a bad rap. They are often thought of as stupid animals, and many times they earn that distinction. Sheep are skittish, and their herd mentality means that they may follow each other anywhere, even into danger. The shepherd's job is to lead the sheep safely from one place to another because they cannot be trusted to lead themselves. Is it any wonder that humans are compared to sheep in the Bible? As intelligent as we are, we can sure do stupid things sometimes. How often does the phrase, "Everyone is doing it!" break down our inhibitions about following a sinful crowd? People can also have a herd mentality, and we will follow people who make compelling arguments for their cases, even if what they are advocating is clearly wrong. Abortion, same-sex marriage, living together outside of wedlock, violent protests; all of these are humans flocking to the wrong shepherd. How gullible we are! Thankfully, we have a Good Shepherd to whom we can always turn. Psalm 23:1 sa

In the next few weeks, you'll be receiving information about re-enrollment at Emanuel. I know it seems early, but the amount of planning that needs to go into a school year necessitates that we get that information as soon as possible.  Each time you need to re-enroll your child at Emanuel, a private, parochial, Lutheran school, you have a decision to make. Is the extra cost and work worth it, or would it be easier and cheaper to utilize the local public school? Yes, it would, but... Your children are receiving something at Emanuel they cannot get from any other school system. Of course, they are being taught at a high level from top-notch teachers, but that isn't it; there are great teachers in other places. Sure, the staff at Emanuel care deeply about our students and work tirelessly to help them feel safe and successful, but that's not it either; school staff all over the place care about kids. No, what they get here is Jesus.  School-aged children are at a pivotal point
