Anticipating Worship: Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 30, 2025—Generosity for Those Grappling with Guilt
Jesus needed to remind Israel of the risks they were running in relationship to God. At times, they reveal the traits of both sons in the story. First, taking the goodness of God for granted, and then, pathetically pleading their goodness to God based on their own self-righteousness. Jesus' lesson is a painfully powerful one: God at all times revealed the traits of the father to them: forgiveness, correction, and an outpouring of love. Such is the kind of rejoicing that the angels witness whenever a sinner is brought past the grief of their guilt to the gracious forgiveness of God.
